Hello everyone! So I'm in the process of experimenting my hair with different brands of purple hair dye.
Last year, I had tried to dye my hair a pastel purple with the Ion Lavender hair dye... which is horrible omgg. DO NOT BUY IT.
This year I've decided to just go with the regular 'ol purple. I started with the Manic Panic Purple Haze hair dye, such a popular brand so of course I'd go with it first.
I first started off bleaching my hair with the L'oreal Quick Blue bleach. I only bleached it once because I didn't need it to be that light.. plus I was scared of damaging my hair...
After first bleaching result:
For some odd reason, my hair did not turn out lighter like my previous experience with this bleach, but whatever! It was good enough for me. I didn't bleach my roots because I wanted the black roots look. I know some of you probably cringed [therefore no photo] at the thought of black roots with yellow hair.
ANYWAYS
Time for the best part, the purple dyeeee. LEZZGO.
I only used one container on my whole head because I wanted to keep my second container for my extensions and little touch ups just in case. I have medium length hair and it's not that thick, but I wish I had more product available to apply on my head. Reference for those with medium, thick hair.. you're definitely going to need two of them.
Since this dye isn't damaging to the hair, I kept in on for like... 5 hours. I think you should keep this on for AT LEAST an hour, just to really get the dye into your hair.
Results for Purple Haze [freshly washed]:
As you can see, since I didn't have that much dye to work with, it wasn't that even... booo, the camera made it much more obvious though.
In bright lighting, it looks like above. When it is darker, it's not that obvious that you have purple hair.
TIP FOR LASTING COLOR: My hair becomes really oily quickly so I'm not a type of a person who can wash their hair every few days so instead I just shampoo my roots and wash it under cold water. This will definitely help with fading because when I shampooed my whole head, the color fading was extremely obvious. Other than that, if you can go a few days without washing your hair then dry shampoo is your friend.
I also bleached and dyed my Luxy Hair extensions in Chestnut Brown. I used the same bleach on them like the one I used on my actual hair. Note that my extensions are human hair.
Bleaching before and after:
As you can see, it didn't become that light but I'm assuming it's because I did not wash them before I bleached them so they still had some hair products in it. But I was tired so I didn't bother to wash them beforehand or bleach them again.
I applied the dye and kept it in for about 2 hours.
I don't have an after picture because the dye DID NOT stick to the extensions. I had leftover dye so I dyed them again.
TIP FOR DYEING EXTENSIONS: DEFINITELY apply heat to the extensions. What I did the second time around was that I used a hair dryer on them and then tied it into my bun, put a plastic bag over my head, applied more heat using my hair dryer... and last of all... I went to sleep with it. At this time I also applied more purple haze to my actual hair so they both were processing together as I was asleep. It was about 7 hours or so.
I woke up with it all dyed and even !! HALLELUJAH!!!
I fell in love with purple hair so much guys. I've seen alot of people complain about the color that Manic Panic leaves when the dye begins but when purple haze began to fade on mine, it was just a really ashy toned blonde with a tint of purple to it. Some parts kind of looked grey but it wasn't ugly. I forgot to take a photo of the color... sorry!!
My hair was still pretty purple when I dyed it splat but because I'm picky, I went on and dyed it again. I read some reviews about the Splat hair dye and apparently it had better staying power than the Manic Panic dyes. I said why nooot? Found it on sale for 7$ at Ulta and bought two boxes in Lusty Lavender. They had a purple desire but naaahh.
Forgot to take a picture of the box... oh well.
So here is the result for Splat Lusty Lavender:
So the color is WAY MORE INTENSE than the manic panic. In dark lighting, my hair still looked noticably purple. As you can see though, at the top of looks fuchsia to purple. Honestly, I absolutely love it. It looks really cool, in my opinion. BUUUUTTT..... omggg... this dye is just way too messy for me. The formula was really liquidy and the color runs like crazy when it's wet. The water NEVER runs clear.
My towels are HELLA pink now.
WARNING: When you're washing out the dye, keep it AWAY from your skin! It will stain it. My hand got stained a bit.
I also think this dye looks better if your hair isn't that blonde to begin with. I used the bleaching kit on my extensions twice to make them light blonde aaand... yeah they don't look purple.
The extensions got pretty dry compared to the L'oreal Quick Blue...
So if your hair color is super light then it comes out looking like this. Some of you might be thinking that it doesn't look bad but honestly, I hate the shade of it. It makes my extensions look like I got them from Claire's/Icing or something. It is also too pink. I'm going to dye them with the Manic Panic Purple Haze again to darken the color and to let it match my actual hair! Lusty Lavender looks more purple on a darker blonde.. orangey color.
OVERALL:
If I had to choose one hair dye forever, I would go with the Manic Panic Purple Haze just because its a lot cleaner. The color for the Splat is great but way too messy to deal with. I also want to WARN you that the purple haze by manic panic DOES like to stain pillow cases even when your hair is washed AND dried. I sleep with a towel on my pillow case now.
I can't talk about the staying power of the Splat dye yet because I haven't had much time to wash it a few times yet. In the future I will be putting up my experience with the Pravana Violet hair dye an the amplified version of Purple Haze. I will mention the staying power of the Splat hair dye on there. Be on the look out!!
